Man, 59, is charged with attempting to abduct child from Aldi

A man has been charged with attempting to abduct a child from Aldi after a man was spotted on CCTV trying to pick up a youngster.

Sergejus Paskevicius, 59, from Heywood in Rochdale, was arrested and will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court today accused of child abduction.

It came after CCTV caught the moment a man standing by the bagging area of an Aldi in Heywood appeared to try talking to a child at around 5.45pm on July 23.

He was standing at the separate bagging area as he apparently tried speaking with a child.

He then appeared to pick the child up and start walking from the store.

Footage of the incident was shared online.

Greater Manchester Police said: ‘We thank the public for their response and patience while we have conducted our inquiries this week, and remind them not to share any information or images online that risk prejudicing this case.’
